Introduction

This guide will provide Installation instruction for the Volvo Diagnostic Backbone Cable and cover two types of installation.

Those types are:

Legacy Models Installation

New Models Installation

FSB

FSB81619A - Please review this document prior to installation

  1. Universal Back Bone Diagnostic Cable
    • Universal Back Bone Diagnostic Cable

    • Fuse

    • May need to be installed into vehicle fuse box

    • 2018+ Power adapter

    • Used for New Model Installations

    • Legacy Power adapter

    • Used for Legacy Model Installations

  2. Can/J1939 connectors Terminating resistor connector
    • Can/J1939 connectors

    • Terminating resistor connector

    • Vehicle side connector

    • Aux connectors

    • Not used Do not connect!

  3. Cable side power adapter connector Power adapters plug in here
    • Cable side power adapter connector

    • Power adapters plug in here

    • Universal diagnostic cable connector

    • Hardware specific cable adapter plugs in here

  4. Remove tray Remove screws
    • Remove tray

    • Remove screws

    • Remove panel to expose power distribution junction box

  5. Power distribution junction box should look like this Fuse & Expansion information label is located on the back side of the  power distribution junction box cover panel
    • Power distribution junction box should look like this

    • Fuse & Expansion information label is located on the back side of the power distribution junction box cover panel

    • B1-1, B1-2, or B1-3 can be used

    • Included fuse may need to be installed. The fuse locations are identified on the label

  6. You may see more than 1 J1939 terminating resistor available on 2018/19 model trucks.
    • You may see more than 1 J1939 terminating resistor available on 2018/19 model trucks.

    • Identify J1939 (DL1) terminating resistor.

    • Clearly identified on label as DL1 J1939

    • DO NOT CONNECT TO DL3 J1939 !

  7. Locate terminating resistor Remove terminating resistor
    • Locate terminating resistor

    • Remove terminating resistor

    • Install the terminating resistor into the Universal Backbone Diagnostic Cable provided

    • This must be installed for the vehicle to operate correctly!

  8. Plug the remaining connector from  the Universal Backbone Diagnostic Cable into where the terminating resistor was removed
    • Plug the remaining connector from the Universal Backbone Diagnostic Cable into where the terminating resistor was removed

  9. Verify that the yellow and green wires match when plugged into vehicle.
  10. Plug the legacy power adapter into the Universal Backbone Diagnostic Cable
    • Plug the legacy power adapter into the Universal Backbone Diagnostic Cable

    • 3 pin at end of cable

    • Power adapter is white with a red retainer

  11. Check for +12V at B1-1, B1-2, or B1-3 +12V Power terminal is on the windshield side
    • Check for +12V at B1-1, B1-2, or B1-3

    • +12V Power terminal is on the windshield side

    • Ground terminal is on the cab side

    • If there is no power found, a fuse need to be installed. Read label on back of the cover panel for details. [invalid guide link]

    • Once power is verified, plug Into B1-1, B1-2, or B1-3

  12. Plug the Universal Backbone Diagnostic Cable  into the provided Hardware adapter cable
    • Plug the Universal Backbone Diagnostic Cable into the provided Hardware adapter cable

  13. Power distribution junction box is different in the new models
    • Power distribution junction box is different in the new models

    • Newer model Volvo Trucks connection point locations are different

    • The only different connector is the power

    • CAN & J1708 connectors and installation are the same as legacy

  14. Terminating Resistor is here Remove terminating resistor
    • Terminating Resistor is here

    • Remove terminating resistor

    • Install the terminating resistor into the Universal Backbone Diagnostic Cable provided

    • This must be installed for the vehicle to operate correctly!

    • Plug the remaining connector from the Universal Backbone diagnostic cable into where the terminating resistor was removed

  15. Plug the2018+  power adapter into the Universal Backbone Diagnostic Cable 3 pin at end of cable
    • Plug the2018+ power adapter into the Universal Backbone Diagnostic Cable

    • 3 pin at end of cable

    • Power adapter connector is black

    • Locate Power Expansion plug

    • Check for +12V

    • If no power is present a fuse may need to be installed.

    • Refer to the label on the bottom of the power distribution cover panel for identification

    • Once power is verified, plug into the cable
