Installation guide: Road-facing camera

Once you have connected all the wires as shown in the quick start guide, use the Activate camera feature in the Integrated Video app to guide you through each step of the installation process. More detailed instructions are included below.

Important firmware updates

Many cameras have pending over-the-air firmware updates that will automatically download once the camera is connected to power and completes its initial boot sequence. This sequence can take up to 45 minutes to complete.

After the initial boot up, the camera will reboot again twice during the FW update process. After the multiple reboots complete, the camera should be fully operational.

Always let firmware updates complete once they begin. Do not disconnect the camera from power during config updates. Power loss during the update process will corrupt the configuration and cause the camera to malfunction.

Do not swap in an upgraded SD card before the initial device config update completes using the standard SD card. The standard SD card contains important config info. Initial firmware updates must be downloaded and written to the camera using the standard SD card.

If the installation requires an SD card upgrade but the vehicle is not within cell coverage drive the vehicle to an area with good coverage so the initial firmware updates can complete.

Only swap the card AFTER the camera's green cell network light becomes solid and to call support.

Connect the camera cables

1. Use the key to unlock, press the release button on the security cover, and remove the camera’s security cover.

2. Connect cable A to the camera.

3. If you ordered an extra storage SD card, place the card into the SD slot.

4. Replace the security cover and leave the key in the lock.

5. Connect cable A to the DC power adaptor.

6. Connect the wiring harness (B) to the DC power adaptor.

7. Connect the wiring harness (B) to the connector cable (E).

Connect the camera to the power source

The camera needs to be connected to a power source.

Before connecting the camera, ensure that the engine is switched off and the DC power adaptor is switched on.

To connect your camera to a power source, you need to use the correct connector for the vehicle.

• For heavy trucks (12V only), use the 3-wire connector (cable E).
• For light-duty vehicles manufactured before 1996 or heavy trucks with 6 pin connectors use, use the 3-wire connector (cable E).

Connecting using the 3-wire connector (cable E)

This installation method is only recommended for advanced installers with experience of undertaking electrical wiring work.

Important: Do not connect the power harness to the vehicle tracker at this time.

The camera requires 3 connections: ground, ignition, and power.

1. Connect the ground line wire (black) to the body or frame of the vehicle, for example the chassis. Use a ring terminal to terminate the ground wire to the chassis with a self-tapping screw or a factory bolt.
2. Connect the ignition input wire (white) to an ignition source that will only receive power when the ignition is on.
3. Connect the power input wire (red) to a battery source where there is constant power, even when the ignition is off.
4. Connect directly to the vehicle battery terminal or as close to it as possible. This connection point should be fuse protected to not more than 5 amps.

To determine a true ignition power source:

1. Select a wire.
2. With the engine off, use a voltmeter to measure the DC voltage on the wire. It should show 0 volts.
3. Turn the key to the Accessory position. The voltage should still show 0 volts.
4. Turn the key to the On/Run position. The voltmeter should show 12 volts.
5. Crank the motor and make sure that the voltage does not drop below 9 volts.
6. While the vehicle is running, confirm that the voltage on the same wire is 12 volts or higher.
7. Turn the vehicle’s engine off and confirm that the voltage on the same wire is 0 volts.

If the installation requires extending the harness’ ignition wire outside the cab and directly to an alternator or solenoid, protect the wire and connection using a heat shrink ring terminal, dielectric grease, and wire loom along with a weatherproof fuse holder, and fuse of 3-5 amps.

Switch camera on

When the camera is connected to the power source, switch on the ignition to turn the camera on.

During the camera boot-up process, the red, blue, and green lights will flash in sequence.

If the blue and green lights are not solid after 10 minutes, troubleshoot the camera indicator lights.

Identify the camera

Use the Integrated Video app to scan the barcode to identify the camera.

Each camera has a unique barcode and serial number. The serial number can be found on the camera itself and on the box that the camera came in.

To identify the camera, you scan the barcode using the Integrated Video app (See Camera installation guide – before you begin if you do not yet have the app).

In the Integrated Video app:

1. Go to Settings > Add new camera or device.
2. Hold your device so that the barcode appears in the app viewfinder. The app will automatically identify the camera.
   Alternatively, you can enter the serial number manually. To do this, select Manual Input, enter the serial number using the keypad, and then select Next.

In the Spotlight app:

1. In Spotlight, go to Account > Device setup.
2. On the What do you want to install? screen, tap Camera.
3. Hold your device so that the barcode appears in the app viewfinder. The app will automatically identify the camera.
   Alternatively, you can enter the serial number manually. To do this, select Manual Input, enter the serial number using the keypad, and then select Next.

Choose camera placement

Before attaching the camera to the windshield, you need to choose the most appropriate location. When choosing a location, consider the following:

1. The camera should be placed as high as possible within the wiper sweep zone of the windshield on the driver’s side.
2. The camera portion of the device should reside in the top 2 inches (5 cm) of the wiper zone.
3. The camera must not obstruct the driver's view of the road ahead.
4. Avoid placing the camera near the vehicle's climate control system, as excess heat can interfere with the camera operation.
5. Leave enough space to remove the key from the security cover.

The camera can be placed anywhere within the highlighted area.

Stick to windshield

The windshield glass temperature should not be too hot or cold. Please install the camera in a moderate temperature (recommended between 10°C-26°C or 50°F–80°F).

1. Use the supplied wipes to clean and dry the area on the windshield where the camera will be placed.

2. Peel off the protective strip from the adhesive pad.

3. Stick the camera to the windshield.

4. Hold the camera in position with firm pressure for 30 seconds.

Align the camera

The camera should point directly at the road ahead, with no obstructions.

1. Adjust the angle of the camera

1. Move the security cover slightly so that the camera can be adjusted.
2. Adjust the camera relative to the slope of the vehicle’s windshield.
3. Replace the security cover.

2. Test the camera placement

1. In the app, you will see a preview image. Ensure the camera is correctly aligned and that nothing obstructs the view.
2. Once you are happy with the location and the view, replace the security cover and lock.
3. In the app, choose Next.

Tidy away the cables

If you are installing a driver-facing camera too, attach it to the connector before tidying away the cables.

To tidy away the camera cables, to ensure they do not obstruct the drivers view:

• Secure the power cable extension into the headliner panels and down the A-pillar. Do not put the video connector behind the A-pillar.

or

• Use the cable ties provided to secure the cables out of the view of the driver. Then route the power cable around the side and behind the rest of the interior panels down towards the power source.

If you had to unmount the vehicle tracker, mount, and secure it in a stable location. If you are installing a driver-facing camera too, wait until after the camera is installed before you mount and secure the vehicle tracker.

Pair the camera with a vehicle and activate

The camera must be paired with a vehicle so that when the camera detects a harsh driving incident, it can be associated with a particular vehicle.

1. In the app, on the Identify Vehicle screen, choose the vehicle to pair with the camera.

2. Choose the vehicle from the list or by searching for the vehicle by the vehicle name, vehicle identification number (VIN), vehicle registration number (REG), or electronic serial number (ESN).

3. Select Next.

4. Confirm that the camera is paired with the correct vehicle and then select Activate camera.
