Installation guide: XT63xx with ECMD for heavy duty vehicles on Fleet
Skill level: Intermediate
Installers must be able to remove dash panels and instrument clusters, and mount and secure devices safely.
This article explains how to install a Xirgo XT63xx device on heavy-duty vehicles with a powered ECMD cable.
- Skill level: Intermediate (installers must be able to remove dash panels and instrument clusters, and mount and secure devices safely)
- Time required: 20-40 minutes
The ECMD cable provides power to the Xirgo device. No 3-wire install connections are made unless you receive prior approval from Verizon Connect.
If the device does not recognise ignition status from the ECM, contact Support. The device may need an updated configuration.
In this article:
Before you install the device:
- Locate and capture the device serial number
- Identify the device LEDs
Installing the Xirgo XT63xx
For installations that do not have optional peripherals, step 3 is not required.
For installations that do not have a Driver ID reader and external buzzer, step 4 is not required.
- Step 1: Choose where to mount the device
- Step 2: Connect the ECMD cable
- Step 3: Connect the I/O harness
- Step 4: Install the Driver ID reader and external buzzer
- Step 5: Connect the adaptor cable
- Step 6: Connect power and mount the replacement connector
- Step 7: Route the cables and secure the device
- Step 8: Verify operation
Preparing for installation
Locate and capture the device serial number
The device serial number is on the top of the device.
Capture the device serial number (you will need it later to verify the installation).
Identify the device LEDs
- Identify the location of the device LEDs.
- Note the LED colours and statuses.
Amber LED (Cellular Network)
- OFF: No power to device
- Solid: Ignition is ON, cellular network is acquired
- Flashing: Ignition is OFF
- Fast Flashing: Ignition is ON; searching for cellular network
Blue LED (Bluetooth)
- OFF: Bluetooth is not connected
- Flashing: Bluetooth is connected
Green LED (GPS)
- OFF: Searching for satellites
-
Flashing: Satellite count +1
- The LED flashes once to indicate a GPS signal is acquired.
- The LED continues flashing to indicate the number of satellites that are visible to the device.
Installing the Xirgo XT63xx
Step 1: Choose where to mount the device
Find a suitable location for the device to be mounted, such as behind the instrument cluster or the knee panel.
-
For best reception:
- The device should be label-side up and skyward-facing.
- The device should have a clear line of sight out of the vehicle.
- The device should not be directly under metal.
The device will work through glass, plastic, and most composites.
- The mounting location should allow securing the device with zip ties, VHB tape, or Velcro.
Step 2: Connect the ECMD cable
Cable parts
Red: 14 pin ECMD connector plugs into the Xirgo device
Green: OBD-II bypass connector, connects to the factory OBD-II port
Orange: OBD-II replacement connector, mounts in place of the factory OBD-II port
- Plug the 14 pin Molex connector on the ECMD cable into the device.
- Confirm the cable is a powered ECMD cable as follows:
- Connect the ECMD cable and device into the OBD/DLC and check if the LEDs turn on, or
-
Examine Pin 14:
- On powered ECMD cables pin 14 is populated (see image below)
- On non-powered ECMD cables the wire to pin 14 is removed and covered with shrink tubing (see image below).
- On powered ECMD cables pin 14 is populated (see image below)
- If no optional peripherals are installed, go to Step 5: Connect the adaptor cable.
- Otherwise, go to Step 3: Connect the I/O harness.
Step 3: Connect the I/O harness
This step is only for installations that have optional peripherals or sensor inputs.
- Plug the 24 pin Molex I/O harness connector into the Xirgo device.
- Connect the I/O harness to the optional inputs (see images below).
Wire colours may change, always verify the pin number.

Step 4: Install the Driver ID reader and external buzzer
This step is only for installations that have a Driver ID reader and external buzzer.
- Mount the Driver ID reader in a location that is convenient for the driver to use, such as to the right of the steering column.
Use consistent placement in each of the customer’s vehicles whenever possible. - Install the Driver ID reader by drilling a 3/8" hole into a dash panel with at least 3/4" minimum clearance depth behind the panel.
- Remove the retaining washer from the back of the reader and feed the 2-pin harness through the hole. Then secure the reader in place by sliding the retaining washer back onto the harness until it is snug against the back of the panel.
- Snap the 2-pin Driver ID connector into the Driver ID Reader cable head of the I/O harness, and secure the excess cabling using a zip tie.
Powering the external Driver ID buzzer
Reminder: No 3-wire installation.
When an ECMD diagnostic harness is used to power the device, the external Driver ID buzzer requires a 12V source to operate.
- Provide power to the external buzzer:
Disconnect the 24-pin harness from the device.
Join the red and white wires together using a butt connector or crimp cap. - Snap the 3-pin buzzer connector into the buzzer cable head of the I/O harness and secure it using a zip tie.
Step 5: Connect the adaptor cable
Plug the purple end of the 14-pin Xirgo diagnostic harness adaptor into the purple universal adaptor cable.
Step 6: Connect power and mount the replacement connector
- Remove the vehicle’s OEM Data Link Connector (DLC).
- Plug the vehicle’s OEM DLC into the diagnostic Y cable that is included in the kit (see blue arrow in image below).
- Twist to lock the connection. The connection will click when locked.
- Install the ECMD Y-cable in the vehicle’s OEM DLC mounting location (see orange arrow in image above).
- Secure the cable along its route, taking care to keep it clear of any moving parts.
Step 7: Route the cables and secure the device
- Route the cables to the mounting location you chose earlier (see Step 1).
Coil and secure any loose cabling using zip ties to ensure it will not interfere with the driver or normal operation of the vehicle.
- Mount the device in the chosen location (see Step 1).
The mounted device:
Should be label-side up and skyward-facing, with a clear line of sight out of the vehicle.
Should not be directly under metal. - Fasten the device securely to a stable mounting bracket or wire bundle using zip ties, VHB tape, or Velcro.
The device must be fastened securely to prevent it from moving and generating erroneous harsh driving event reporting.
Do not cover the ESN/Serial Number with two-sided tape. (The label will peel and be unreadable when the tape is removed.)
- Check everything is fastened tightly, and trim zip ties if they have excess length.
Use extreme caution when trimming the zip ties. Accidentally cutting or nicking nearby vehicle wires will cause performance issues with the vehicle.
If you have removed the dash panel, do not replace it until the network connection is confirmed (see Step 8).
Step 8: Verify operation
If you’re a Reveal customer, verify your installation in Reveal.
If you’re a professional installer using Reveal, use the Reveal Hardware Installer app.
If you’re installing a device in Fleet, use the Fleet Installer Portal.
