Skill level: Expert

The installer can identify and connect to common engine and electrical systems on vehicles and assets; such as control modules, sensors, trigger wires, alternators, starters, and solenoids. The installer can use pull-up and pull-down resistors, relays, and diodes.

Time required: 90-120 minutes

This guide covers the installation of single zone and multi-zone temperature probe inputs with optional CARB compliance examples for some ThermoKing and Carrier Trailers.

Technicians must Contact Support to update a device's configuration file to enable the temperature probe feature.

In this guide:

Gather the kit parts

  • CalAmp 3640 and ECMD harness kit
  • 12/24V relay (if necessary)
  • F39534 - connectorized I/O harness
  • F37572 - single zone 2 wire temperature probe or multi-zone temp probe F39377

Preparing to install temperature probes

  • Installers must use 4 conductor stranded and shielded PVC jacketed 22 AWG wiring to extend Reefer and temperature probe wiring.
  • Installers must ground temperature probes, drain wires, and door sensors to the vehicle tracker.
Do not make a chassis ground. Temperature probes are too sensitive to ground noise. Connect probe ground wires back to a ground wire on the vehicle tracker's I/O harness.
  • The single zone probe has two wires which you will connect to the 3640 I/O harness.

Blue temp sensor signal wire

  • Remove the 2 pin Molex connector from the I/O harness’s 1BB line.
  • Connect the blue signal wire to the green/black striped wire which emanates from pin 16 on the I/O harness.

Brown Temp Sensor Ground Wire

Connect the brown ground wire to the I/O harness’s black ground wire from pin 22

Pin 22 may have a bundled pair of common ground wires, if so, use one of them.

Installation

Installing a single zone temperature probe

  1. Complete the baseline 3640 installation
  2. Remove the 2 pin Molex from the 1BB connector line end from the 3640 I/O harness 1BB_Connector.png
  3. Extend the 1BB green/black striped signal wire and black ground wire from the vehicle’s cab to the refrigerated compartment using existing pass-throughs whenever possible.
    • If no usable pass throughs exist, you will need to drill them, insert a grommet to protect the wiring and seal the hole with silicone.
    • Protect all exposed wiring with a plastic loom.
  4. Route the extended wiring up from the entry point along the top of the refrigerated compartment and secure it every 12” (30cm) using nylon cable clamps.
  5. Mount the temp probe in the customer’s desired location.
  6. Connect the temp probe’s blue signal wire to the extended wire that corresponds with the 3640’s green/black wire.
  7. Connect the temp probe’s brown ground wire to the shield drain wire and extended wire that corresponds with the 1BB black ground wire.

Installing multi-zone temperature probes

  5. Mount the temp probes in the customer’s desired location with Probe 1 closest to the 3640.
  6. Connect both probe’s red signal wires to the extended wire that corresponds with the I/O harness’s 1BB green/black signal wire.
  7. Connect Temp Probe 1 white and black wires to 1BB ground wire and shield drain wire.
  8. Connect Temp Probe 2 white wire to Probe 1 yellow/green wire.
    • Leave Temp Probe 2 Y/G wire unconnected in the two-probe setup.
  9. Connect the Magnetic door sensor's trigger wire to Input 4 and its ground wire to the 1BB ground wire and shield drain wire, if equipped.

California CARB compliance

Do not test or perform any connections on the reefer when plugged into AC power. This could be fatal.

In order to be CARB compliant in the state of California, reefer diesel engine on/off and AC shore power on/off must be monitored. Wiring for the reefer units is manufacturer-specific, here are two examples:

ThermoKing Refrigeration Units

Diesel Engine On/Off and AC Power On/Off can be found inside the Reefer controller.

  • Test all connections with a DMM, On = 12 VDC, Off = Zero VDC
  • Use a 5Amp weatherproof fuse on all connections

Carrier Refrigeration Units

Diesel Engine On/Off and AC Power On/Off can be found on connectors beneath the reefer unit. Test all connections with a DMM, On = 12VDC, Off = ZeroVDC.

12V relays must be used to isolate the two inputs along with weather-proof 5amp fuse holders.

  • Input 1 - Connect DKC-J1 22 Reefer Diesel On/Off
  • Input 2 - Connect Reefer Purple Wire - AC On/Off signal
