Use Spotlight to install and set up the Vehicle Data Device

This guide explains how to use the Verizon Connect Spotlight app to install and set up the Vehicle Data Device.

When you use Spotlight to install a device, the app:

  • Guides you through the installation and set-up of the device
  • Assigns the device to the vehicle
  • Allows you to enter vehicle information
  • Connects the device to Verizon Connect
  • Provides help when you need it.

The engine must be OFF when installing the Vehicle Data Device.

Step 1. Download and log into the Spotlight app

  1. Download the Spotlight by Verizon Connect app.

  2. Log into the app with your Verizon Connect credentials.
    If you do not have a login, contact your administrator.

Step 2. Assign the device to the vehicle

  1. In the Spotlight app, go to Account > Device setup.
  2. On the What do you want to install? screen, tap Vehicle tracker.
  4. Use the app to scan the barcode that is located on the back of the device.
    If you can’t scan the code, choose Manual input, and enter the ESN or IMEI number.

  5. Enter the year, make, and model of the vehicle.
    Alternatively, to scan the vehicle identification number (VIN), tap SCAN VIN.

    Note: If you are installing the device in an Emergency Vehicle, do not scan or enter the VIN manually, instead enter the following information:
    - Year: The year the vehicle was manufactured.
    - Make: Select 'Emergency vehicle'.
    - Model: Select one of the following: 'Police Vehicle', 'Ambulance', 'Fire Engine', or 'Other'.
  6. Select the confirmation check box and tap CONFIRM.
    In some older vehicles, the Vehicle Data Device only operates in GPS mode. This means that some features, such as getting odometer readings and diagnostic troubling shooting codes from the vehicle are unavailable. You are still able to track the vehicle and receive harsh driving alerts. Learn more about GPS mode.

Step 3. Choose how you want to install the device


  1. On the Welcome screen, tap GET STARTED.
  2. On the How do you want to install your device? screen, choose one of the following:

    • VDD with no cable - to install the device without using a cable
    • VDD with Y-cable - to hide the device and keep the OBD-II port free

Step 4. Enter vehicle information and connect to Reveal


  1. Once you have installed the device in the vehicle, choose NEXT or SKIP TO CONNECT VEHICLE.
  2. When the device is recognised, tap CONNECT MY VEHICLE.
  3. While waiting for the device to connect, enter the vehicle information. Tap EDIT VEHICLE PROFILE WHILE YOU WAIT.
  4. On the Vehicle identity screen, enter the vehicle information and choose Save.
    Enter the following information:
    • Vehicle name (mandatory)
    • License plate number
    • VIN
    • Year, Make, Model
    • Fuel type
    • Tank capacity
    • Fuel efficiency (city)
    • Fuel efficiency (highway)
    • Current odometer reading
  5. When the vehicle is successfully connected, the vehicle appears on the map with a pop-up that says Vehicle Connected.

  6. Choose COMPLETE SETUP and then CLOSE to complete the installation.

Verizon Connect shall have no liability whatsoever for any damages that arise from, or are connected with, your use of our services, including the GPS tracking hardware and dash cams, in a manner contrary to the(se) instructions or in violation of law and/or our agreement. Tracking hardware connected to the diagnostic port in any vehicle that has third-party devices also connected to the diagnostic port can cause interference or loss of functionality of the third-party device. These third-party devices include, but are not limited to, wheelchair lifts, lifesaving equipment, emergency lighting, and radar guns. If such a conflict exists, contact Verizon Connect support to have the tracking hardware configured to support the third-party device. Failure to do so relieves Verizon Connect of all liability for damages that arise from or are connected with your use of the devices. Installed devices may only be removed and transferred to another vehicle if the second vehicle has been tested for compatibility, as per the(se) instructions. Transfers between vehicles which do not follow the(se) instructions will void any and all warranties from Verizon Connect, and relieve Verizon Connect of all liability for damages that arise from or are connected with your use of the devices.
