Installation guide: Replace a 3G vehicle tracker with a Vehicle Data Device

Time required: 20-40 minutes

This article explains how to replace a 3G vehicle tracker with a Vehicle Data Device (VDD) using the Reveal Hardware Installer app.

In this guide:
Step 1: Position the vehicle
Step 2: Gather your tools
Step 3: Download the Reveal Hardware Installer app
Step 4: Procedure

Step 1: Position the vehicle

  1. Move the vehicle to an area with good network coverage and with a clear view of the sky.
  2. Switch the vehicle's engine off.
    The engine must be off when you are installing the device.

Step 2: Gather your tools

Depending on your vehicle type, you might need some of the following tools:

  • Cutting tool to trim zip-ties
  • Flashlight
  • Dash panel removal tool
  • Additional zip-ties

Step 3: Download the Reveal Hardware Installer app

  1. Download the Reveal Hardware Installer app.

  2. Log in to the app with your Verizon Connect credentials.
    If you do not have login credentials, contact your administrator.

Step 4: Procedure

  1. Select the Service Work Ticket.

  2. Scan or enter the old 3G device ESN.

  3. Select the service item Service/Repair - Single Device and tap Continue.

  4. Verify the vehicle details and tap Next.

  5. Select QA tests and tap Swap device.

  6. Identify the new device to be installed. Scan the new device or manually input the new device's ESN, and tap Confirm.

  7. Use the app to scan the barcode that's located on the back of the device.

    What barcode do I use?
    If you can't scan the barcode, tap in the ESN field and manually enter the ESN or IMEI number.
  8. Confirm the new ESN.

  9. Verify the vehicle's Year, Make and Model, and tap NEXT.

  10. Tap CONFIRM to confirm the vehicle details.

  11. Tap GET STARTED.

  12. Choose the installation method VDD with Y-Cable.

  13. Select SKIP TO CONNECT VEHICLE.

  14. Once the Y-Cable and VDD are connected, tap CONNECT on the Device setup screen.

  15. Select EDIT VEHICLE PROFILE to enter additional vehicle information while the device locks on.

  16. Once all information including mileage has been entered, select Save.

  17. Once you receive the Vehicle Connected confirmation, tap COMPLETE SETUP.

    If no cameras were previously installed in the vehicle, you'll be returned to the Device details screen. Tap CHECK IN to complete the installation.

    If a camera is present in the vehicle:
    - The camera is detected and automatically reassigned to the new vehicle tracker.
    - You'll be returned to the QA test screen.

    If you want to check alignment of the camera image in the frame:
    - Tap Camera alignment (this displays The Camera was reassigned screen), and
    - Go to sub-step 18.

  18. Check the camera alignment (optional).
    It is recommended to check the camera alignment and realign the camera if necessary.

    Refer to the relevant section for the installed camera type: Dual dashcam, Road-facing camera or Driver-facing camera.

    Dual dashcam

    1. Tap Check alignment. The road-facing camera image displays.
      If the camera needs to be adjusted, tap How to adjust the camera angle and adjust the camera as necessary (see Step 4 in Installation guide: Dual-Facing AI Dashcam).
    2. Tap Next camera. The driver-facing camera image displays.
      If the camera needs to be adjusted, tap How to adjust the camera angle and adjust the camera as necessary (see Step 5 in Installation guide: Dual-Facing AI Dashcam).
    3. On The camera was reassigned screen, tap Finish and go to sub-step 19.

    Road-facing camera

    Old model

    1. Tap Check alignment. The road-facing camera image displays.
      If the camera needs to be adjusted, tap How to adjust the camera angle and adjust the camera as necessary (see Step 4 in Installation guide: Road-Facing AI Dashcam).
    2. On The camera was reassigned screen, tap Finish and go to sub-step 19.

    New model

    1. Tap Check alignment.
    2. Follow the on-screen instructions.
    3. On The camera was reassigned screen, tap Finish and go to sub-step 19.

    Driver-facing camera

    Old model

    1. Tap Check alignment. The driver-facing camera image displays.
      If the camera needs to be adjusted, tap How to adjust the camera angle and adjust the camera as necessary (see Step 4 in Installation guide: Driver-Facing AI Dashcam).
    2. On The camera was reassigned screen, tap Finish and go to sub-step 19.

    New model

    1. Tap Check alignment.
    2. Follow the on-screen instructions.
    3. On The camera was reassigned screen, tap Finish and go to sub-step 19.

  19. When the camera realignment is finished, you'll be returned to the Device details screen.
    The reassigned camera will be in the device list.
    Tap CHECK IN to complete the installation.
