Before you begin

  • Skill level: Intermediate (installers must be able to remove dash panels and instrument clusters, and mount and secure devices safely.)

  • Time required: 20-30 minutes

This document provides instructions to install an RFID card reader into Charter vehicles outfitted with an existing 4G Xirgo device or a 3G Xirgo device that requires a swap. It also introduces a new RFID I/O adapter harness, and a new 6-pin RFID card reader based Driver ID solution that replaces Charter’s existing iButton solution.

Dispatches to install RFID card readers into vehicles with existing 4G devices make up most of the ongoing work tickets you will complete during the roll-out. You may begin at Installation Step 5. when no 3G swap is required.

3G swaps

Caution

If you are dispatched for 3G swap it must be performed in RHI before beginning the 4G device install.

The overwhelming majority, if not all, 3G device swaps are already complete. However, it's still possible you may encounter a recently located vehicle with a 3G device. Mark these vehicles as 3G device in RHI and your job sheet. You do not need to call Support, a a 3G swap go back visit will be scheduled for the vehicle.

3G units can be identified by the part number listed on the device Xirgo label.

  • Xirgo 6360 - AT&T 3G device

  • Xirgo 6350 - VZW 3G device

4G models begin with 637x or 638x.

Avoiding EMI

Xirgo devices are susceptible to EMI effects from the power and RFID harnesses when they are tightly bundled together and/or zip tied directly to the Xirgo. This can cause the device to be unable to interpret RFID card reads correctly -even when the reader provides a green LED confirmation response, as well as causing the Xirgo to reboot causing missed trip or sensor data.

Arriving onsite

Obtain vehicle keys, installation hardware, and RFID test cards from the local POC or vehicle’s driver to use while testing installations. Generic test cards not assigned to a driver must be returned to the local POC before leaving each day unless you work out an accomodation with the POC due to their schedule or the next days start time.

Note

Any Charter employee's personal RFID card must be left with the vehicle or given back to the driver or local POC when the installation is complete.

Kit components

  • RFID I/O Adapter Harness: Part # CBA-US-XIR-002-01-00

  • RFID Card Reader: Part #PLA-X21 with 3M DuoLock

  • Locking Grommet x 1: Heyco Part# 2137

  • Alcohol wipes x 2

RFID I/O adapter harness

  1. Use the RFID I/O adapter harness when performing 4G upgrade installs and 3G migration swap installations. Do not use it for new vehicle installations. Skip to Installation Step 4.

  2. The RFID I/O adapter harness installs in-line between the Xirgo and the existing I/O harness, and allows technicians to complete installations without re-making I/O and power connections. It does not replace the existing I/O harness.

RFID card reader

RFID reader installation requires increasing the existing Driver ID reader’s pass through hole to 1” in diameter. A hole saw may be easier to control than a 1-1/8th inch Unibit or standard drill bit. If you accidentally drill the diameter 1/8” too large the grommet will not seat in the hole. Use a safe method you are comfortable with and always look before you drill.

RHI verification and vehicle naming conventions

During about 30% of the RFID confirmations in the RHI App, instead of going to the RFID Install screen, RHI is taking the installers to the Xirgo Install screen, which demands VIN, Vehicle Name and Vehicle #. When this happens, it is critical for installers to enter the Vehicle Name and Vehicle # exactly as prescribed by Charter without error.

Per Charter, the Vehicle # and Vehicle Name are:

  • Exactly the same in each field.

  • The format is always the three character Region Code, followed by a dash "-" followed by the last 8 characters of the VIN, no spaces.

Installation Steps

Note

Most vehicles are already equipped with a 4G device.

If no 3G/4G device swap is required, you can skip to Installation Step 5 after locating the device.

Step 1. Locate the existing Xirgo installation

Step 2. Perform the 3G swap in RHI if necessary

Step 3. Remove the 3G device if necessary

  1. Use snips to cut the mounting zip ties and remove the 3G device.

  2. Disconnect the 14-pin and 24-pin harness Molex ends from the Xirgo and lay them aside.

  3. Disconnect the 2-pin iButton reader from the 24-pin I/O harness then disconnect the I/O harness from the Xirgo.

Step 4. Mount the 4G device

Mount the 4G device in place of the 3G device you removed.

Step 5. Connect the inline RFID adapter harness

  1. Connect the male end of the RFID I/O adapter harness to the existing I/O harness.

  2. To power the device, connect the female end to the Xirgo.

  3. The existing power connections, peripheral and sensor input connections are passed through to the Xirgo.

26269571963923-09e149b1-9c7f-4033-bd03-c5ca966f6ba2

Step 6. Determine if the existing Driver ID reader hole can be reused

  1. To reuse the existing hole, you must increase its diameter from 3/8” to 1”. You must also be able to Velcro mount the new RFID reader in a location convenient for the driver to reach with their RFID badge.

  2. If the existing Driver ID reader’s mounting hole cannot be reused due to location or fit, then a new 1” hole must be drilled.

  • You must disconnect the iButton reader’s 2-pin Molex connector from the I/O harness so it doesn’t trip the buzzer after completing the installation.

  • Leave the old iButton reader mounted in place and secure the harness.

Recommended RFID reader mounting locations:

  • Location 1: Reuse the existing Driver ID hole to the right of the steering column whenever possible.

  • Location 2: An empty space on a driver’s side hush panel.

  • Location 3: Left side of the steering column if the other locations are not practical or available.

26269571975699-fca7fc9d-00d8-404f-bd3a-386bc778c768

Step 7. Make the RFID reader hole

  1. Create a 1” hole. Look before you drill, be careful not to damage adjacent vehicle parts.

  2. Pass the RFID reader’s 6-pin Molex through the grommet then insert the grommet into the hole.

26269553615507-d3f5ee92-0fb0-4add-99ab-e77143637367

Step 8. Route the RFID reader’s 6-pin harness

  1. Route the 6-pin harness towards the Xirgo until you are able to connect it to the RFID I/O adapter’s matching 6-pin harness leg.

  2. Secure the harness using zip ties so it doesn’t interfere with the driver or normal operation of the vehicle.

26269572008339-ea1de3dc-3283-4add-86e4-f7ed160c260f

Step 9. Mount the RFID reader

  1. Clean the mounting location with the provided alcohol wipes.

  2. Peel the Duolock adhesive backer from the reader then press and hold the reader to the mounting location for 30 seconds.

    RFID_Reader__adhesive_backing.png
    RFID_Reader__mount.png

Step 10. Download firmware updates

  1. Start the vehicle for 15 seconds then turn it off to initiate any remaining firmware updates.

  2. Wait 10 minutes before restarting the vehicle to allow firmware updates to complete. The Xirgo will reboot during the FW update process.

Warning

Xirgo devices do not update firmware while a vehicle is running.

Step 11. Restart the vehicle

Step 12. Test the RFID reader

  1. The Xirgo buzzer will sound prompting you to touch a Charter RFID card to the reader. The reader’s LED flashes green to indicate a successful read, and the buzzer stops.

  2. If the card reader’s red LED flashes that indicates a failed card read. Verify the reader's harness and connections are secure and free of damage.

  3. If the adapter still fails to read, call the Tech Check-in Team so they can verify the FW update completed successfully and assist with testing the device or if an RMA is necessary. Make a note in RHI and your job sheet about the reason for the failure and any RMA.

Step 13. If the buzzer fails to sound

  1. Verify the 3-pin buzzer connector is secure and inspect the harness for damage if the buzzer fails to sound. Use a spare buzzer as an additional test if one is available.

  2. If the buzzer still doesn’t sound, call Support and speak with the Technician Check-in team so they can verify the FW update completed and send an RMA replacement buzzer.

Note

Notate any failed device or accessory in your job sheet along with a note about any check in you were unable to complete because an RFID badge was not made available.

Step 14. Verify installation using the Reveal Hardware Installer app

This step is for Verizon Connect professional installation technicians only. Charter employees should refer to Support for Charter employees performing installations.
