Asset Data Device mounting guide

Follow these guidelines to correctly mount your Asset Data Device (ADD).

General mounting guidelines

• Maintain line of sight: Mount the device with a clear view of the sky.
• Avoid interference: Do not mount the device under the floor or inside a metal frame, as this blocks the network connection.
• Stay clear of heat and motion: Place the device away from heat-generating machinery and moving parts.
• Protect from the elements: Choose a location protected from road debris and high-pressure water spray.
• Do not use rivets or countersunk screws.
• Do not over-tighten the screws or bolts, as this can break the plastic.

Device orientation

For the best performance, mount the ADD with the logo facing up or in a vertical position.

Mounting an Asset Data Device with nose-mounted 7-pin harness

Follow these steps to secure the ADD and its harness to a trailer:

1. Mount the tracker: Attach the tracker to the trailer skin at least 3 feet (0.9 meters) above the 7-pin connector and to the right of the rivet channel.
2. Route the harness: Lead the harness down to the trailer’s cable management box.
   Note: In some trailers, you may need to remove the interior panel to access the cable management box. 
3. Secure the cable: Use cable mounts to secure the harness. Ensure it does not interfere with the 7-pin connector or the glad hands.
4. Lead the harness through the box: Push the harness through the upper and lower channels of the cable management box and into the strike plate cavity.
5. Route to the connector: Pull the required length of the harness back out and up to the 7-pin connector.
6. Prepare the wires: Cut and save the external fuse holders from the ADD harness for later use.
7. Protect unused wires: Cut any unused wires flush at the harness sheath. Use electrical tape or heat shrink tubing to protect the wiring.
8. Store extra cable: Coil the unused portion of the harness and zip tie it to the wiring inside the strike plate area under the trailer.
9. Secure exposed wiring: Zip tie the exposed part of the harness to the wires entering the 7-pin box.
   Open the 7-pin box: Remove the 7-pin cover plate to reach the internal connectors.
10. Connect power and ground: Route the harness through the entry grommet and into the 7-pin box to make the connections.
11. Replace the fuse holder: Reattach the weatherproof fuse holder to the red power wire.

Trailer use cases

• Flatbed container trailer: Run a power drop-out circuit from the SAE J560 7-pin connector to your preferred mounting location on the side of the trailer.
• Lowboy trailer: For a more covert installation, mount the tracker further back on the trailer body near the breakaway system battery. This location is less visible and more difficult for unauthorized people to notice.
