Disassembly guide: Volvo trucks on Fleet
Skill level: Intermediate
Installers must be able to remove dash panels and instrument clusters, and mount and secure devices safely.
This article explains how to disassemble Volvo truck dashboards.
Time required: 20-30 minutes
In this article:
- Step 1: Gather your tools
- Step 2: Remove the left side trim and switch panel
- Step 3: Remove the vent
- Step 4: Remove the upper panels
- Step 5: Remove the center trim
- Step 6: Remove the left center panel and instrument cluster
- Step 7: Release the center switch panel
Step 1: Gather your tools
You will need the following tools:
- Slotted screwdrivers
- Phillips screwdrivers
- Driver bits and socket set
- Ratchet
- Dash panel removal tools
Step 2: Remove the left side trim and switch panel
- Carefully slide the side section of the trim panel towards you (see red arrow in image below).
Do not pry the side section of the trim panel, it is not a clip. - Release the clip at the front of the dash (see green arrow in image above).
- Slide the front section of the trim panel to the left (see pink arrow in image above).
Do not pry the front section of the trim panel, it is not a clip. - Remove the switch panel (see blue lines in image below).
The clips are at the switch panel ends.
Take care prying the top and bottom of the switch panel.
Step 3: Remove the vent
- Remove the two screws (see orange areas in image below).
- Carefully pull the bottom of the vent towards you (see red line and arrow in image above).
A blue connector for some diagnostic cables is revealed (see pink arrow in image above). - Carefully slide the bottom of the vent towards you and downwards (see green arrows in image below).
Do not pry the top of the vent. A tab that secures the vent to the dash is located there.
Step 4: Remove the upper panels
- Remove the upper left panel by pulling upwards (see orange arrow in image below)
- Remove the 2 screws at the top of the dash (see green arrows in image below).
- Remove the upper right panel by pulling upwards (see blue arrow in image above).
Step 5: Remove the center trim
- Pry the center trim to release its fastening clips (see blue arrows in image below).
- Starting at the end closest to the steering wheel, slide the trim to the right (see pink arrow in image above).
Do not pry the end of the trim that is closest to the steering wheel. This end of the trim has a tab instead of a clip.
Step 6: Remove the left center panel and instrument cluster
- Remove the upper knob by unscrewing (see yellow area in image below).
- Remove the lower knob by unscrewing (see red area in image above).
- Remove the screw (see blue arrow in image above).
- Remove the left center panel by sliding it down (see orange arrow in image above).
- Remove the trim above the instrument cluster (see pink lines in image below).
- Remove the 4 screws that hold the instrument cluster (see green arrows in image above).
You can now run the diagnostic cable behind the instrument cluster.
Step 7: Release the center switch panel
- Release the center switch panel (see yellow arrow in image below) by pushing it from behind.
The rear of the center switch panel can be accessed through the left center panel, which was removed at Step 6 above.
You can now secure the device behind the center switch panel.
