Installers must be able to remove dash panels and instrument clusters, and mount and secure devices safely.

This guide explains how to install an Asset Data Device - Battery and how to test and validate the installation using the Reveal Hardware Installer app.

  • Time required: 30 minutes
  • Supported assets: The Asset Data Device - Battery be used for any asset that does not have its own power source, such as parked trailers, generators, and containers.

Step 1: Gather your tools

To complete this installation, you need the following tools and materials:

  • Tools
    • Cordless drill with metric and standard bits. (⅛ inch (3mm) drill bit is required, if using pilot holes.)
    • 5/16 inch (8 mm) socket driver.
    • 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) wrench.
  • Materials
    • Two 4 x 1 inch (100 x 25 mm) strips of all-weather VHB tape.

Step 2. Check the box contents

The box contains the following items:

  • Asset Data Device - Battery
  • Activation magnet: Use this to activate and test the device.
  • 3 x self-tapping screws: 5/16” (8mm) hex head, number 12 size, 1” long,
  • 3x bolts: 5/16” (8mm) hex head, M5 thread, 30mm long
  • 3 x lock nuts - 3/ 8” (9.5mm), M5 thread
  • 2 x cable ties
  • 1 x pop-out cardboard drilling template (optional)

Attach the activation magnet to your keychain for easy future access.

Step 3: Identify parts of the Asset Data Device - Battery

A: Mounting holes: Use these with screws/bolts to secure the tracker to the asset.

B: Magnetic status sensor: Located under the Verizon Connect logo. Use this sensor to wake the device and run status tests for battery life and network signals.

Pressing the activation magnet against the sensor does not turn the device off.

C: Status LEDs: Indicators for network , GPS , and  battery.

D: Device label (back): Displays the serial number (SN).

E: Cable tie slots: Use these when securing the tracker with cable ties.

F: Device label (top): Displays the serial number (SN) and barcode.

Step 4: Understand the status LEDs

When performing a status check, hold the magnet over the logo for 2 seconds and release. Use the LED status table below to understand LED behavior.

Step 5. Choose a mounting location

To choose a mounting location, follow these guidelines:

  • Mount the device away from heat-generating machinery and moving parts.
  • Protect the device from road debris and high-pressure water spray.
  • Do not mount the device under the floor, as this blocks the network connection.
  • Do not mount the device in a metal box (such as a tool box), as this blocks the network connection.
  • Ensure the device has a clear view of the sky, with the logo facing up or vertical.

Step 6. Activate the tracker

  1. Before physically mounting the device, confirm it is in the intended location. This allows you to test the connection in that spot prior to final installation.
  2. Hold the activation magnet on the Verizon Connect logo for 10 seconds to wake the device.

Pressing the activation magnet against the sensor does not turn the device off.

  1. Check the LED behavior:
    • Top 3 LEDs (LTE, GPS, Battery): Pulse slowly (2 seconds on, 2 seconds off).
    • Battery LED: Pulses red for 30 seconds.
Note: Due to shipping regulations, the device ships with less than 30% battery charge. The battery charges automatically when the device is connected to power.
    • GPS and LTE LEDs: Pulse while searching for a network connection. When a connection is established, they remain solid for 10 seconds.Wait for the Network and GPS LEDs to turn solid white. The Battery LED should be either solid white or pulsing white.

If you are in bright sunlight, shade the LEDs with your hand to view them clearly.

  2. If you experience any connection issues, check:
    • You are in an area with good connectivity.
    • The device is not obstructed by anything that might block its signal.

If no LEDs light up after 10 seconds, or if the Network LED flashes red for 2 seconds every minute, call Support.

Step 7. Mount the device

To mount the device:

  1. Hold the device firmly in place and mark the positions of the four mounting holes.
  2. When you are satisfied with the location, drill the mounting holes.
Note: Pre-drilling makes it easier to insert screws. Use the drilling template provided in the packaging to avoid damaging the plastic around the mounting holes.
  3. Attach the device to the asset using the included screws, bolts, or zip ties.
    • Do not use rivets or countersunk screws.
    • Avoid over-tightening screws or bolts (keep torque under 100 in-lbs) to prevent cracking the plastic housing.

Step 8. Verify that the device is reporting to Reveal

  1. In Reveal, go to Admin > Fleet and Device List.
  2. On the Entire Fleet tab, search for the tracker’s serial number.
If the asset tracker is reporting, it shows in the list.
