Removal guide: Powered asset tracker
Skill level: Intermediate
Installers must be able to remove dash panels and instrument clusters, and mount and secure devices safely.
This guide explains how to remove a powered asset tracker such as the CalAmp TTU-2830.
Time required: 15 minutes or less.
Read this entire guide before starting to remove a powered asset tracker to ensure a smooth process.
Depending on the vehicle and asset type, you may need the following tools:

Work light
-
Dash panel removal tools
-
Driver bits and socket set
-
Diagonal wire cutters (no scissors)
-
Electrical tape - Super 33 grade or better
Note
Powered asset trackers are typically on:
Self-propelled vehicles with an ignition source (such as cranes, excavators or tractors).
Equipment without an ignition source such as trailers.
Generators.

Move the asset to a suitable location for the removal.

Verify that the asset powers on when applicable.

Note any obvious signs of damage and report it to the contact person.
Caution
The vehicle ignition must be off when you are removing the powered asset tracker.

Locate the powered asset tracker on the vehicle.
Note
Powered asset trackers may be mounted inside or outside a vehicle.
On self-propelled vehicles, the powered asset tracker is usually close to the ignition source under the dash.
On trailers, the powered asset tracker is usually on the trailer tongue, the hitch rail, the side rails, or the front bulkhead.

Carefully remove vehicle panels as necessary to access the powered asset tracker.

Remove all screws or fasteners (zip ties, VHB tape or Velcro) that secure the powered asset tracker in place.
Note
Devices mounted outside a vehicle are secured with screws.
Note
Powered asset trackers can have a 3-wire or a 2-wire install configuration.
3-wire installs are typically on self-propelled vehicles with an ignition source (such as cranes, excavators, tractors) or refrigerated trailers (reefers).
2-wire installs are typically on equipment without an ignition source such as trailers.
Note
Powered asset trackers have the following power sources:
3-wire installs: constant battery power (Batt +), ignition power and ground.
2-wire installs: constant battery power (Batt +) and ground.
Note
Powered asset trackers have the following wires:
3-wire installs: red (+12/24 VDC constant power), black (ground), white (true ignition).
2-wire installs: red (+12/24 VDC constant power), black (ground).

For a 3-wire install only:
-
Locate the power and ground connections at their source.
-
Remove all zip ties from the cables.
-

Cut the wires as close to the vehicle connection as possible (see letter “X” in image below), ensuring to always remove the ground wire first.
Warning
Remove the ground wire first to avoid accidental short to ground situations.

Cover exposed wiring with electrical tape, and secure the tape in place with zip ties.
Caution
To avoid damage to the vehicle electrical system, exposed wiring must be insulated with electrical tape.

Cut off any fuse holders that are on the cut wires.
-
Pull the cut end of the wires through all pass-through holes.

Reattach any fuse holders that were cut off.
Note
This step is only for installations (2-wire or 3-wire) on a semi-trailer.
Semi-trailers have a 7-way connector (see image below).
Power connection wires: blue - AUX/ABS (brakes), brown - running lights, black - side marker lights
Ground connection wire: white - ground
The powered asset tracker should be already detached from the trailer (see Step 1).

Remove the 7-way connector’s mounting plate from the trailer.

Disconnect the device (black) ground wire from the trailer (white) ground wire.

Disconnect the device (red) power wire from the trailer (blue, brown or black) power wire.

Pull the device wires away from the 7-way connector and along the interior of the trailer wall.

Pull the device wires through any pass-through holes.
-
Seal all pass-through holes with all-weather silicone.
-
Ensure the powered asset tracker is detached from the trailer.

Replace the 7-way connector’s mounting plate on the trailer.
Note
This step is only for installations (2-wire or 3-wire) that have optional equipment or wiring connections(for example, digital inputs or PTO connections).

Cut the wires as close to the vehicle connection as possible, ensuring to always remove the ground wire first.
Warning
Remove the ground wire first to avoid accidental short to ground situations.
Caution
Do not cut the cables on the optional equipment as they require special termination ends.

Cover exposed wiring with electrical tape, and secure the tape in place with zip ties.
Caution
To avoid damage to the vehicle electrical system, exposed wiring must be insulated with electrical tape.

Remove all wiring connections and relays.
-
Keep the removed optional equipment along with the removed powered asset tracker.
Restore the vehicle and asset back to the original condition as follows:

Replace all panels that were removed, and ensure they are seated properly.

Check the floor area for screws, wire scraps, zip tie ends and tools.
-
Turn the vehicle key to the ON position to confirm vehicle operation.
The powered asset tracker can later be identified by the serial number.

Record the powered asset tracker serial number within Reveal.
Note
The serial number is on the back of the device (see image below).

Record the details of the vehicle or powered asset from which you removed the powered asset tracker.

Contact Support if necessary to register removal of the powered asset tracker.

Return any keys to the customer.

Identify equipment to be returned to the customer if applicable.

Professional installers: inform the customer of equipment to be returned.

Self-installers: Contact Support to arrange return of equipment.

Failure to do so relieves Verizon Connect of all liability for damages that arise from or are connected with your use of the devices. Installed devices may only be removed and transferred to another vehicle if the second vehicle has been tested for compatibility, as per the(se) instructions. Transfers between vehicles which do not follow the(se) instructions will void any and all warranties from Verizon Connect, and relieve Verizon Connect of all liability for damages that arise from or are connected with your use of the devices.
