Installation Guide: CalAmp ATU-1650MB on Fleet

This installation requires minimal technical expertise.

Time required: 10–20 minutes

This guide explains how to install the CalAmp ATU-1650MB non-powered asset tracker.

Step 1. Gather your tools

To complete this installation, you need the following tools and materials:

  • Tools
    • Cordless drill with metric and standard bits. (⅛ inch (3mm) drill bit is required, if using pilot holes.)
    • 5/16 inch (7 mm) socket driver
  • Materials
    • Pair of all-weather VHB tape strips, sized 1" x 1" or 1" x 1-2".
    • 14” zip tie

Step 2. Check the box contents

The package includes:

  • CalAmp ATU1650
  • Mounting bracket
  • 6 Self-tapping screws

Step 3. Identify parts of the CalAmp ATU-1650MB

A: Power button

B: Status LEDs

C: Mounting holes

D: Mounting bracket

Step 4. Understand the status LEDs

  • Orange LED (COMM signal)
    • Flashing = Acquiring signal
    • Solid = Signal locked on
  • Green LED (GPS signal)
    • Flashing = Acquiring signal
    • Solid = Signal locked on

Step 5. Choose a mounting location

To choose a mounting location, follow these guidelines:

  • Mount the device with the button/LED side up or out.
  • Mount the device away from heat-generating machinery and moving parts.
  • Protect the device from road debris and high-pressure water spray.
  • Do not mount the device under the floor, as this blocks the network connection.
  • Do not mount the device in a metal box (such as a tool box), as this blocks the network connection.
  • Ensure the device has a clear view of the sky.

Step 6. Mount the device

To mount the device:

  1. Hold the bracket firmly in place and mark the positions of the mounting holes.
  2. When you are satisfied with the location, drill the mounting holes.

Pre-drilling makes it easier to insert screws.

  1. Run the zip tie through the slots on the bracket.

  2. Attach the bracket to the asset using the included screws.

    • Do not use rivets or countersunk screws.
    • Do not over-tighten the screws or bolts, as this can break the plastic.
  3. Snap the tracker into the bracket.
  4. Secure tracker to the bracket with the zip tie.

Step 7. Activate the tracker

  1. Hold button for 10 seconds.

  2. Confirm that both LEDs are solid.
