Installation guide: CalAmp 36xx with powered Y-cable | 6 or 9 pin (Reveal and Fleet)
Skill level: Intermediate
Installers must be able to remove dash panels and instrument clusters, and mount and secure devices safely.
Time required: 15-30 minutes.
Configuration file updates
1. Installation technicians must call Support to enable all installed accessory hardware, and apply its parameter settings. For example, a Driver ID and buzzer must be enabled along with parameter settings for the buzzer's grace period and time out settings by calling Support.
2. The configuration file must also be updated to enable white wire ignition detection if a 3-wire (hardwired) power connection is used.

Installing the device
Step 1: Locate the vehicle’s data link connector port
Locate the vehicle’s data link connector port by inspecting the following locations (in this order):
- Under the dashboard
- Beneath the steering wheel column
- Each area indicated in the image below
If you cannot locate the vehicle’s data link connector port, check the vehicle owner’s manual.
Step 2. Choose where to mount the device
The Y-cable must be routed to the device's mounting location. Choose a location with enough passage to route the cable.
Mount the device per the guidelines below.
- Label side up
- Concealed from the driver’s view
- High in the dash for the best signal
- With a clear line of sight out of the vehicle
- Do not mount the device directly beneath metal plates or close to radios. Doing so may affect the signal quality.
Step 3. Record the device ESN
Record the device's Equipment Serial Number (ESN) before beginning installation along with the vehicle information You will need it later to link and verify the installation.
Step 4. Connect the CalAmp adapter to the powered Y-cable
Plug the universal CalAmp adapter end into the universal connector on the powered Y-cable.
Step 5. Remove the vehicle’s data link connector
Remove the vehicle’s data link connector.
Step 6. Mount the replacement data link connector
Mount the replacement data link connector in the location from where you removed the vehicle’s data link connector.
Route the cable to ensure it is clear of any moving parts.
Step 7. Connect the vehicle’s data link connector to the powered Y-cable
- Plug the vehicle’s data link connector into the powered Y-cable’s bypass connector.
- Twist the Y-cable’s sleeve to lock the connection, the connection will click when it locks.
Step 8. Route the Y-cable to the device
Always secure the device and cabling so that they do not interfere with the driver or normal operation of the vehicle.
- Route the 16-pin Y-cable end to where you plan to secure the device.
Coil any excess cable length, and secure it using zip ties. Pay special attention to pedals, steering shafts and telescoping steering wheels and shift levers.
Step 9. (Optional) Connect the I/O accessory and and sensor input harness.

- (Optional) Plug the I/O harness's 24-pin connector into the 24-pin port on the CalAmp 3640.
Step 11. Use the LED lights to identify device status
The Reveal and Fleet implementations of the LED light pattern are significantly different.
For detailed information, please review the CalAmp 36xx LED indicator light patterns article.
The Reveal blink pattern provides more granular detail for the number of GPS satellites, cell signal, ignition info and ECM diagnostic connection data.
The Fleet LED blink pattern provides fewer details, but is easier to remember. The green and amber LED lights will stop blinking and become solid when the device has acquired GPS and cell signal.
Regardless of platform, if the LED's fail to indicate signal lock for cell or GPS signal you may need to move the device to a new mounting spot, or move the vehicle to a location outdoors with nothing overhead limiting signal.
Step 12. Mount the device
Secure the device so that it cannot move. Failure to do so will result in erroneous harsh driving events.
Use zip ties to mount the device to a stable bracket or wire bundle behind the driver's side instrument cluster, center console or knee panel areas.
Step 13. Link the device and verify operation
