Technician guide: XT63xx with 3-wire on Fleet

The installer can identify and connect to common engine and electrical systems on vehicles and assets; such as control modules, sensors, trigger wires, alternators, starters, and solenoids. The installer can use pull-up and pull-down resistors, relays, and diodes.

This article explains how to install a Xirgo XT63xx device with a 3-wire install in light duty or heavy-duty vehicles.

Time required: 20-40 minutes

Wired ignition requires a 3-wire install parameter file. If the device does not recognize ignition status, a parameter update may be required. (At Step 8, you will call Fleet Support for this.)

In this article:

For installations that do not have optional peripherals, step 5 is not required.
For installations that do not have a Driver ID reader and external buzzer, step 6 is not required.

Step 1: Locate and capture the device serial number

The device serial number is on the top of the device.

Capture the device serial number (you will need it later to verify the installation).

Step 2: Identify the device LEDs

  1. Identify the location of the device LEDs.

  2. Note the LED colors and statuses.

Amber LED (Cellular Network)

  • OFF: No power to device
  • Solid: Ignition is ON, cellular network is acquired
  • Flashing: Ignition is OFF
  • Fast Flashing: Ignition is ON; searching for cellular network

Blue LED (Bluetooth)

  • OFF: Bluetooth is not connected
  • Flashing: Bluetooth is connected

Green LED (GPS)

  • OFF: Searching for satellites
  • Flashing: Satellite count +1
    • The LED flashes once to indicate a GPS signal is acquired.
    • The LED continues flashing to indicate the number of satellites that are visible to the device.

Step 3: Choose where to mount the device

Find a suitable location for the device to be mounted, such as behind the instrument cluster or the knee panel.

  • For best reception:
    • The device should be label-side up and skyward-facing.
    • The device should have a clear line of sight out of the vehicle.
    • The device should not be directly under metal.

The device will work through glass, plastic, and most composites.

  • The mounting location should allow securing the device with zip ties, VHB tape, or Velcro.

Step 4: Install the 3-wire connection

Using the 24-pin power harness, locate and connect the harness wires as follows:

  • The red wire to a constant power (battery +) source.
  • The white wire to an ignition source such as the ignition switch, factory spare wire connectors labelled for such use, or the fuse box.
  • The black wire to ground.

Light-duty vehicles

Using a ring terminal, terminate the ground wire to the chassis using a self-tapping screw, a factory-marked grounding bolt, or a factory spare wire connector labelled for such use.

Heavy-duty vehicles

Connect the ground wire to a factory-marked grounding point, or to a circuit labelled for such use.

For installations on heavy trucks, semis, or construction equipment:
Do not attempt to make a chassis ground with a self-tapping screw and ring terminal.
Always use a factory-marked grounding point or a circuit labelled for such use.

Step 5: Connect the I/O harness

  1. Plug the 24 pin Molex I/O harness connector into the Xirgo device.

  2. Connect the I/O harness to the optional inputs (see images below).
    Wire colors may change, always verify the pin number.

    • A: input 1 is pin 6; + positive input
    • B: input 2 is pin 7; (-) negative input

    • B: Panic/Privacy
    • C: Driver ID Buzzer
    • D: Driver ID Reader

Step 6: Install the Driver ID reader and external buzzer

This step is only for installations that have a Driver ID reader and external buzzer.

  1. Mount the Driver ID Reader in a location that is convenient for the driver to use, such as to the right of the steering column.
    Use consistent placement in each of the customer’s vehicles whenever possible.

  2. Install the Driver ID reader by drilling a 3/8" (9.5mm) hole into a dash panel with at least 3/4" (19mm) minimum clearance depth behind the panel.
  3. Remove the retaining washer from the back of the reader and feed the 2-pin harness through the hole. Then secure the reader in place by sliding the retaining washer back onto the harness until it is snug against the back of the panel.
  4. Snap the 2-pin Driver ID connector into the Driver ID Reader cable head of the I/O harness, and secure the excess cabling using a zip tie.

Powering the external Driver ID buzzer

The external Driver ID buzzer is powered from the ignition source that you connected to earlier (see Step 4).

Snap the 3-pin buzzer connector into the buzzer cable head of the I/O harness and secure it using a zip tie.

Step 7: Route the cables and secure the device

  1. Route the cables to the mounting location you chose earlier (see Step 3).
    Coil and secure any loose cabling using zip ties to ensure it will not interfere with the driver or normal operation of the vehicle.

  2. Mount the device in the chosen location (see Step 3).
    The mounted device:
    Should be label-side up and skyward-facing, with a clear line of sight out of the vehicle.
    Should not be directly under metal.
  3. Fasten the device securely to a stable mounting bracket or wire bundle using zip ties, VHB tape, or Velcro.
    The device must be fastened securely to prevent it from moving and generating erroneous harsh driving event reporting.
    Do not cover the ESN/Serial Number with two-sided tape. (The label will peel and be unreadable when the tape is removed.)

  4. Check everything is fastened tightly, and trim zip ties if they have excess length.
    Use extreme caution when trimming the zip ties. Accidentally cutting or nicking nearby vehicle wires will cause performance issues with the vehicle.
    If you have removed the dash panel, do not replace it until the network connection is confirmed (see Step 8).

Step 8: Update the device configuration and verify operation

  1. Call Fleet Support at 877.943.7306 to update the device configuration so ignition status is sensed for the 3-wire installation.
  2. Verify operation of the device.

To verify operation:

If you’re a Reveal customer, verify your installation in Reveal.

If you’re a professional installer using Reveal, use the Reveal Hardware Installer app.

If you’re installing a device in Fleet, use the Fleet Installer Portal.
